“Rime of the Ancient Mariner”: Iron Maiden’s Adaptation of S. T. Coleridge’s Epic Ballad
Abstrak
This paper studies the musical adaptation of Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” (1798) by New Wave of British Heavy Metal figureheads, Iron Maiden, on their Powerslave album (1984). After discussing the relevance of Romanticism to heavy metal and of the ballad for the band, the study focuses on the transtextual (Gérard Genette, Palimpsestes, 1982) modernisation, reduction, and narrative transmodalisation of Coleridge’s poem and glosses from the Sibylline Leaves 1817 edition. Among the thematic transpositions, the question of whether the Christian dimension and moral of the tale are expurgated is addressed, while special emphasis is laid on the two sets of quotations and on the transaesthetic musical adaptation in the middle of the song.
