Job Stress, Burnout, and Work Ability in Tire Manufacturing: The Role of Age and Experience

This study examined the challenges of the predominantly male, aging workforce in South Korea′s tire manufacturing industry, focusing on physical demands, job stress, and burnout. The present study surveyed 400 workers employed on the production line at a tire manufacturing company in the Republic of Korea. This study revealed a predominantly male workforce, a majority of married employees, an older age demographic, a diverse range of employment tenures with a significant portion of long-term staff, and variability in rest period durations and frequencies. An analysis of data from tire manufacturing workers revealed that high job autonomy and relationship conflict contributed to lower job satisfaction and increased stress. Generational conflicts between older, experienced workers and younger employees further exacerbated dissatisfaction. Despite the physically demanding nature of the job, no significant difference in physical ability across age groups was observed. This study also found a high burnout index, characterized by cynicism, emotional exhaustion, and decreased professional efficacy, particularly among those performing repetitive tasks. The findings suggest a need for interventions to address burnout and improve job conditions for the aging workforce.
