The Racial Aesthetics of DC Hardcore

Shayna L. Maskell

Abstrak

Chapter 2 focuses on Bad Brains, their seminal 1982 release of the same name, and how that pivotal album creates and simultaneously deconstructs conventional representations of a black identity, including the parallels between jazz and blues. The chapter also probes the contradictions and complications of black identity through the electric guitar as a sonic threat and an affirmation of white technical virtuosity, using the binary of blackness and whiteness to understand how race is constructed. This chapter also includes a discussion of the whiteness of DC hardcore, particularly through the contrast of Bad Brains and Minor Threat.
