Visual arts graduate's success

Samantha M. Wilkerson Laura-Edythe Coleman

Abstrak

Before visual art students graduate and join the field they need to know about the career path options. There are no clear routes to success as there are in other careers where education and accolades can lead to success both personally and financially. The purpose of this study is to explore three specific career paths (gallery representation, residencies and freelance work) and how they can or cannot benefit the individual arts graduate. Through a survey, this study gathers qualitative and quantitative information from over 80 visual arts graduates at all stages in their career in regards to their personal paths, income and perceived successes. Freelance was found to be the most beneficial path but key data proved it is not without its setbacks. Additionally, more paths arose throughout the study as being greater opportunities as well such as in-house agency work.
