Resonant light–atom interactions

Abstrak

Abstract In this chapter we shall study the processes that occur when an atom is irradiated with a light beam that is resonant with one of its natural frequencies. We shall start by making a few general observations, and then give a detailed analysis of the process based on the time-dependent Schr¨odinger equation. This will lead us to the concept of Rabi oscillations, from which we shall be able to obtain a deeper understanding of how absorption transitions work.
